When I started to use social technology I just wanted to communicate with my friends and family. It was supposed to keep me connected.

Lets just say in practice... that is not what happened.

So, I ended up setting up a whole ass home server that now hosts a few "replacement" services that are private and ran by yours truly.

Its awesome because there is no one trying to sell or use the data that is uploaded to the server and there are no algorithms, its just chronological sharing, and back to just connecting.

I think it's awesome that I can host it, and I can share it with you!

What's This "Federation" Thing?

Think of each app (Mastodon, PixelFed, Matrix) as a neighborhood.

When federation is off, the neighborhood gates are closed — only residents can visit. When federation is on, the gates open and people from other neighborhoods can visit and talk to us, while each neighborhood still enforces its own rules.

We can turn it on if we want. I just started with it turned off just becuase

The hardest part is getting you setup with the email and walking you through changing your password

I am here to help you with that. After you have the email setup you can use that email to setup the other services.

It is also easier to open the links and sign up in a web browser first
before attempting to use the links to connect in the phone apps
